Timing
The Eye Opener will be using a new timing system for the 2009 race. The ChronoTrack D-Tags are a new disposable tag with many benefits, including; accurate time tracking, no fees for lost or unreturned tag, less hassle post race, lighter, less intrusive tag, easier to attach to shoe, and no post race tag turn in.

The tag comes attached to your bib number and must be attached to your shoe before the race.

Q & A section:

1. What happens if the D-tag gets wet?

The tag is completely weatherproof and will work regardless of rain, heat, storms, humidity or other inclement conditions.

2. How do I make sure I have the right tag?

Each tag will be clearly marked with the bib number of the participant to whom the tag is assigned. The timing tags are clearly marked with the runner’s bib number. The purpose of traditional chip check was to ensure that the chip given to the runner was the correct chip. Because the tags are already labeled with the runner’s bib number, there is no need to check that the tag is correctly assigned.

3. How do I make sure that my tag works?

Each D-tag is checked and double-checked for functionality before they are distributed to the athlete. The tag is always “on” and does not need to be activated. There will be no “tag check” or “chip check” at the EXPO.

4. Can I leave the D-tag on my bib?

No. For optimal performance, the D-tag must be attached to the shoe in the proper manner.

5. Can I flatten and tuck the whole D-tag in my laces to make sure it stays?

No. This can cause damage to the D-tag and also lowers the performance of the D-tag. For optimal performance, the D-tag must be attached to the shoe in the proper manner.

6. Can I create a hole in the D-tag and tie it on?

No. Puncturing or cutting the D-tag can damage the tag. For optimal performance, the D-tag must be attached to the shoe in the proper manner.

7. Are you sure the D-tag will stay adhered throughout the race?

Yes! The D-tag has a special adhesive to ensure its durability. Alterations to the D-tag or how it is attached to the shoe are far more likely to cause additional problems that could have easily been avoided.

8. What if I don’t have laces?

The D-tag can also be used by attaching it to your ankle with a Velcro strap. The tag should still be formed to make a “D” shape and then attached with the Velcro.

More details
Due to the generous sponsorship of WasteManagement of South Carolina and the support of USC Upstate, there will be no entry fee for high schools that participate in the Eye Opener.

High School teams must register online at www.sctrackworld.us. College teams enter at directathletics.com. The anticipated operational date for this site is August 1st. The registration deadline is 11:00 p.m. on August 28th. We must pay for each chip – it is important for coaches to keep their rosters current and to delete runners who will not be competing.

Teams that normally finish in the top 50% of the Eye Opener field are encouraged to enter the International Division. Other teams should enter the Championship Division. (Note – the International races are less crowded than the Championship races). Schools may enter separate divisions (International/Championship) for each gender. Teams may not mix genders between divisions. Declarations are not necessary.

The Eye Opener is sanctioned by the National Federation of State High School Associations in S.C., N.C., Ala., Tenn. and Va.

A pasta dinner will be served at USC Upstate on Friday at 6:30. Contact Jimmy Stephens (503-5845) for speaker and ticket information.

Technical T-shirts (Milliken VisaEndurance©) with the Eye Opener logo will be sold for $20.

Fleet Feet Sports and their knowledgeable staff will sell cross country shoes and apparel.

Pictures will be taken and sold to Eye Opener participants by PrettySporty.com (www.prettysporty.com).

Teams are expected to bring their own fluids.

Technical shirts with “Eye Opener Top 10” will be awarded to the top 10 finishers in all races except the Junior Varsity divisions.

All-you-can-eat pizza (with drink) will be available after the race at Mr Gatti’s (100 McMillan Dr.) for $6.00 per person (tax included). Teams should identify themselves as Eye Opener participants.

The Spartanburg Marriott at Renaissance Park (864-596-1211) is offering a rate of $75.00 per night (up to 4/room) for teams participating in the Eye Opener. Ask for the “Eye Opener Cross Country Meet” rate. The cut-off date for this rate is August 24th. This property (located in downtown Spartanburg) is five minutes from the competition venue and within walking distance of downtown restaurants. The Marriott offers a full service breakfast for a fee. Continental breakfast is not provided.

A new type of chip timing (D-tag) will be employed this year. These disposable tags must be removed from the bib number and attached to the shoe. Additional instructions on how to affix D-tags to shoes will be sent before the race.
